RIKHI RAM SHARMA (1900-1961)

The journey of 'Rikhi Ram brand' started with the original founder Late Pandit Rikhi Ram Sharma (born in native village Samoor, District Una, Himachal Pradesh, India), a great innovator and state of art musical instruments maker for many renowned maestros of Indian classical music since 1920 from original establishment in Anarkali Bazaar, City of Lahore (now in Pakistan). He was an eminent musician (vocalist) and one of the top  known musical instrument maker of that era. His father Pandit Gobind Ram Sharma was also a great musician as well as making musical instruments locally in his native village Samoor, District Una, Himachal Pradesh, India (inhabitant place of his previous 5 generations). Original foundation of this fine art craft in the family was laid there and Pandit Rikhi Ram initiated his training under guidance of his father. Later migrated to Lahore, where he also learnt playing sitar from eminent local musician Janab Abdul Harim Poonchwala. His devotion and dedication perfected his skills in developing the art which enabled him to acquire prominence globally. His success stands recognized by the trust and confidence reposed in him by his mentor Janab Abdul Harim Poonchwale and Janab Ramzan Khan.

The traditional musical instrument invented and developed by him became the part of life of his contemporaries, renowned maestros and leading personalities like Ustad Fayyaz Khan Sahib, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Saheb and Pt. Onkar Nath Thakur and many more maestros. The bondage of Pandit Rikhi Ram with them became an oxygen of musical performances of these contemporaries of that era. Worthwhile to say, in the absence of one, the other is incomplete. The success of performance equally depends upon the efficacy of musical instruments. Not many would know that Late Rikhi Ram Sharma was one of the three founders of Lahore Museum and looked after it for many years. He was associated with many top government officials, top judiciary servicemen and many kings of northern pre-partitioned India during his special responsibility job there. He became the most sought out personality of his work/trade. While enjoying the peak days of his glorious prominence was separated and uprooted by unfortunate circumstances of partition from his place of worship (showroom cum workshop) situated in Anarkali Bazaar, Lahore along with museum responsibility. It was after partition of India in 1947 that Pandit Rikhi Ram had to migrate to establish his empire in Delhi. The land of Delhi, the benign God, provided him shelter there. Since Delhi had a profound history in assimilating various musical ragas and its source of manufacturing musical instruments, yet full of uncertainties. Nonetheless, a ray of light provided him with a hope for yet a new beginning. Thus a morning to resume his worship in his chosen field to serve again the musical industry by contributing with his innovative ideas, by setting up his new factory cum residence in Motia Khan, Paharganj, Delhi and showroom (allotted on rent by Custodian of evacuee property, Government of India in lieu of property left out in Lahore ) in Connaught Place, New Delhi (business officially registered title under his name in 1951) with the same passion and expertise. He laid the solid foundation of the Rikhi Ram brand for all maestros and music aspirants to gain access to his highest quality standard products and job work/repairs. He rendered his exclusive services to maestros like Ustad Bade Gulam Ali Khan Saab, Ustad Faiyaz Khan Saab, Ustad Amir Khan Saan, Pandit Omkarnath Thakur, Pandit Uma Dutt Sharma, Hafeez Ali Khan Saab, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Allah Rakha Khan and many more, who got their musical instruments commissioned by him. He was an official musical instruments supplier of All India Radio and most Government Universities around the country. He was also the first (one of) exporters of musical instruments of India. He gained immense popularity as a pioneer musical instrument maker of the country, with one of it’s kind largest manufacturing/production units of India and trained many new apprentices to become a skilled craftsman of tomorrow. The time being on his side, he acquired his prominence in this part of the world. He started serving to the various dedicated maestros enabling them to be the part of their musical worship. Undoubtedly, his name became synonymous to top quality.

On September 10, 1961, he chose to leave this world by giving a succession equipment to his only son Late Pandit Bishan Dass Sharma (Pandit Rikhi Ram was survived by his wife, Shrimati Dhano Devi Sharma, three married daughters and one son), who continued the journey on the path shown by his late father. The contribution of late Pandit Bishan Dass Sharma is known as a legacy of Late Pandit Rikhi Ram Sharma. The said legacy continues!
